Exploring High-Fiber Dietary Intervention (NUTRIVENTION) in Multiple Myeloma: Impact on Progression and Immune Response
This study investigates the effects of a high fiber plant-based dietary (HFPBD) intervention on patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM). The pilot trial included 20 participants with BMI ≥ 25, focusing on feasibility, metabolic markers, microbiome composition, and immune profiling. Results showed improvements in BMI, insulin resistance, microbiome diversity, and immune function, suggesting potential benefits in delaying progression to active multiple myeloma (MM). In vivo studies on Vk*MYC mice supported these findings, indicating a significant delay in disease progression with the HFPBD.
Key Points:
- Study Focus: High fiber plant-based diet in MGUS/SMM.
- Participants: 20 patients with BMI ≥ 25.
- Intervention: 12-week HFPBD with 24-week health coaching.
- Endpoints: Feasibility, metabolic markers, microbiome, immune profiling.
- Safety: Intervention deemed safe and feasible.
- Clinical Outcomes: Improved BMI, insulin resistance, microbiome diversity.
- In Vivo Study: Vk*MYC mice showed delayed MM progression.
- Microbiome Impact: Increased butyrate producers in humans and mice.
- Immune Response: Reduced inflammation, improved T cell profiles.
- Conclusion: HFPBD may delay MGUS/SMM progression to MM.
