The IMF Medical Scholars for Health Equity in Myeloma Mentorship Program

The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) has partnered with the W. Montague Cobb/NMA Health Institute’s Cobb Scholars Program to develop a mentoring program for African American medical school students.

Twelve students, several of whom are from Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU), have been paired with 12 myeloma experts who are dedicated to health equity – together they are conducting 12 projects in health disparities in myeloma. These will be presented as posters at the Annual Meeting of the National Medical Association.

• #IMFMedScholars was launched by the IMF in collaboration with the National Medical Association and the Cobb Institute.
• The program aims to educate individuals from minority communities about myeloma and engage them early in their training.
• The goal is to increase the workforce of those involved in the care of myeloma patients and promote long-term health equity.
• Less than 6% of physicians in the United States are of African-American descent.
• The program selects 12 medical students from minority backgrounds and pairs them with myeloma experts as mentors.
• The students work on research projects focused on health disparities in myeloma and receive mentorship and support.
• The research projects will be presented at a special reception during the annual meeting of the National Medical Association.
