Confirmation of the utility of the International Staging System and identification of a unique pattern of disease in Brazilian patients with multiple myeloma
Not much information has been obtained on multiple myeloma’s (MM) occurrence rates and treatments in Latin America. However, this analysis observes factors of MM in Brazil based on information provided by sixteen institutions. This study identified “the unique aspect of the pattern of the disease for Brazilian myeloma patients, with hypercalcemia as the main risk.” It also confirmed that the International Staging System (ISS) is a more useful prognostic index than the Durie-Salmon staging system in Brazilian patients.
