Published in the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON), this article covers the pathophysiology of myeloma-related oncologic emergencies as well as provides a guide for the assessment and intervention of such emergencies.

Multiple myeloma patients may present with oncologic emergencies, such as myelosuppression (anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia), bone-related injuries that demand immediate medical attention, and acute renal failure. This article reviews the pathophysiology of these kinds of oncologic emergencies. It includes a basis for assessing and intervening when such oncologic emergencies arise.
