What Is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow plasma cells. It is synonymous with "myeloma" and "plasma cell myeloma." Plasma cells make antibodies against infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. A cancerous or malignant plasma cell is called a myeloma cell. Myeloma is called “multiple” because there are frequently multiple patches or areas in bone marrow where it grows.

Charlie’s Story

Charlie and I were married in April 1971.  The interesting thing about Charlie is that he has never been sick….and when I say that I mean, all these years, rarely a sniffle, cold, or flu.  Even when our children were small, I was always the one who got sick with germs they brought home from school.  We used to joke about his being so healthy.

Staten Island MMSG receives $1500 from The Lois & Richard Nicotra Foundation

The Staten Island Multiple Myeloma Support Group was one of the seventeen recipients of a $1,500 award from the The Lois & Richard Nicotra Foundation.   Since the foundation’s inception in 2011, it has awarded a total of $161,310 to non-profit organizations and scholarship recipients.  Laura Mooney, SIMMSG co-founder, said that the award money would be used for the groups participation in an upcoming health fair to spread awareness of this rare cancer.
