What Is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow plasma cells. It is synonymous with "myeloma" and "plasma cell myeloma." Plasma cells make antibodies against infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. A cancerous or malignant plasma cell is called a myeloma cell. Myeloma is called “multiple” because there are frequently multiple patches or areas in bone marrow where it grows.

History of The Villages Multiple Myeloma Support Group

The Villages Multiple Myeloma Support Group was founded by Carolyn Curtis in August 2013. It was after Carolyn’s diagnosis of Myeloma and subsequently attending the International Myeloma Foundation Patient and Family Seminar in Boca Raton in that Carolyn was inspired to begin a Patient Support Group in The Villages. With her husband, Ed, they accepted the challenge of promoting and leading the group. Dan List, with his wife Ruby, would succeed Carolyn & Ed. Since the group was founded the membership has grown to over 100 patients and caregivers.
