Myeloma Minute: We Could Not Have Done It Without You!

Myeloma Action Month Is a Success

The success of this year’s Myeloma Action Month focusing on individuals like YOU - Myeloma Warriors - is immeasurable. Many Myeloma Warriors created video blogs, changed their Facebook profile pictures to include a Myeloma Warrior frame, tweeted with the hashtag #myelomawarrior; and overall, raised the visibility of the myeloma community. The reach of these Myeloma Warriors was felt globally, and we thank international myeloma organizations for participating, including those in Latin America, France, Belgium, Nigeria, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Armenia, Canada, India, the Nordic nations, and more!

10 to Win the Fight
RCW in Nashville, TN

The Southeastern Virginia (SEVA) Myeloma Networking Group has organized an IMF Fundraiser as part of Myeloma Action Month. The members of the SEVA Networking Group ask you to share this request with your family, friends, and neighbors to join the “10 to Win” challenge. If 10 people donate just $10 and challenge their family and friends to do the same, there’s no limit to how much can be raised! Please join this challenge to help the IMF fund research for a cure.

The IMF will host a Regional Community Workshop in Nashville on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Registration is FREE, but seating is limited. Here’s your chance to learn from and meet one-on-one with myeloma experts Ed Libby, MD (Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Seattle), Craig Cole, MD (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI), and Kevin Brigle, PhD, NP (Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA).

9/11 Toxic Exposure Not Forgotten

In a recent blog, IMF Chairman Dr. Brian G.M. Durie noted concerns by legislators about proposed changes in the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act for the World Trade Center Health Program (WTC Health Program). To help patients understand how this important program might help them, the Staten Island Multiple Myeloma Support Group will host a special meeting May 9, at 7:00 p.m., at the Hilton Garden Inn. Attorney Karen Soren will discuss compensation awards and insurance coverage.

Research Funding Available

Thanks to the efforts of the IMF Advocacy Team, multiple myeloma and all blood cancers will be returned to the list of service-connected diseases able to apply for research funding through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) under the Department of Defense. CDMRP contains Peer Reviewed Medical Research Programs (PRMRP) and a smaller subset for Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Programs (PRCRP).
Learn about the requirements and instructions on how to apply for these grants. While deadlines are not listed on this website, we urge myeloma researchers to move quickly. The IMF advocacy team has spoken with experts familiar with this application process who have stated pre-applications have historically had due dates early as the first week of May.
