Ambitious Black Swan Research Initiative Project Kicks Off in Iceland

In his blog this week, IMF Chairman Dr. Brian Durie reports from the kickoff meeting of the innovative iStopMM® project at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik. Funded by the IMF’s Black Swan Research Initiative®, the study will screen all individuals over age 40 for the earliest signs of disease. The IMF team (which included President Susie Novis Durie) encountered tremendous enthusiasm from scientists, officials, the media, and the public for this innovative effort to stop myeloma in its tracks. Ray Romano to Host IMF 10th Annual Comedy Celebration - November 5th

The IMF’s annual Comedy Celebration will take place on Saturday, November 5 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Actor and comedian Ray Romano returns as “Everybody’s Most-Loved Host,” with featured performers Bill Burr, Jeff Garlin, Dom Irrera, Larry Miller, Kevin Nealon, JB Smoove, and Fred Willard. Proceeds from the event benefit the Peter Boyle Research Fund and support the Black Swan Research Initiative® (BSRI). Renowned actor Peter Boyle died in 2006 after a four-year battle with myeloma. In celebration of the event’s 10th anniversary, the event will honor Loraine Alterman Boyle for her extraordinary work as the event chair over the past 10 years. Since the annual Comedy Celebration began in 2007, the event has raised more than $5 million to support myeloma research. The evening will include a pre-show cocktail reception and silent auction, and a post-show party featuring a live swing band and dancing for VIP ticket holders. Tickets are now on sale HERE.

 

 

The University of Heidelberg & the IMF Host a Successful Patient & Family Seminar

The University of Heidelberg in collaboration with the IMF had a successful Patient & Family Seminar with more than 200 people participating from September 24–25, 2016. Keynote speaker Dr. Robert A. Kyle discussed the journey from yesterday’s myeloma treatments to today’s landscape with newest available therapies, which sparked many questions from patients. A doctors’ meeting, organized by Dr. Hartmut Goldschmidt, also included a presentation from Dr. Kyle, entitled “MGUS - A 40-year follow-up of 1,384 patients.” Overall, the seminar offered lively interactions amongst patients and doctors and was warmly received.

 

7th Annual Wayne Hamby Memorial Golf Tournament to Benefit the IMF

In 2010, Wayne Hamby passed away from multiple myeloma. For the past 6 years, the Pinecrest Golf Club in Bluffton, South Carolina has held a golf tournament to honor his memory. This tradition has continued through the years, and October 22, 2016 will mark the 7th Annual Memorial Wayne Hamby Golf Tournament.
