Myeloma Minute: Myeloma ACTION Month

The International Myeloma Foundation Kicks Off Myeloma ACTION Month on March 1st

The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is reaching out to primary care doctors, lawmakers, and patients to raise awareness of the disease during the organization’s 2016 Myeloma Action Month campaign, starting Mar. 1. In 2009, inspired by the organization’s key message “knowledge is power,” the IMF recognized the need to heighten the profile of this as-yet incurable cancer and declared March as Myeloma Awareness Month. This year, the IMF has renamed the campaign as Myeloma ACTION Month to better reflect the dynamic, proactive approach it is taking to educate those who affect myeloma patients’ lives. To take action, visit the IMF’s Myeloma ACTION Month website.

Team IMF Remembers Pat Killingsworth

The IMF is deeply saddened by the loss of powerful and passionate patient advocate Pat Killingsworth. After fighting multiple myeloma for nearly 9 years, Pat died on his 60th birthday (February 11, 2016) at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida, with his wife Pattie and other family members by his side. In 2010, Pat and his co-founders worked with the IMF to start the Nature Coast, a Florida myeloma support group. Pat also attended multiple American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual conferences with the IMF, and was an active voice at the annual IMF Support Group Leader Summit. IMF InfoLine coordinator Paul Hewitt noted that Pat was a continuous source of information for patients and caregivers—a true “Beacon” of light for the entire myeloma community. Multiple Myeloma Patient Brian Helstien Runs the SKECHERS Los Angeles Marathon

Having been a lifelong athlete, Brian Helstien did not a let myeloma diagnosis stop him from pursuing his passion. Before his diagnosis, Helstien ran marathons and completed an Ironman Triathlon. Since being diagnosed with myeloma, Helstien has continued to run every day. Helstien ran on behalf of the IMF in the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, February 14, 2016. Part of what led Helstien to the finish line was running in the memory of his dear friend Pat Killingsworth.
