Myeloma Minute: High-Risk Myeloma Definition Updated

IMF's International Myeloma Working Group Publishes New Consensus Update

On June 20, 2016, the journal Blood published “Treatment of multiple myeloma with high-risk cytogenetics: a consensus of the International Myeloma Working Group.” This consensus updates the definition for high-risk (HR) multiple myeloma based on cytogenetics, which is a branch of genetics that analyzes the structure and function of genetic material on chromosomes. The paper states “risk stratification in MM is important to predict survival and to define a treatment strategy.” Furthermore, it concludes that cytogenetic abnormalities detected by FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) testing are “clinically relevant prognostic factors in MM.” To access the report, click HERE.

IMF Educates on Dangers of Limiting Access to Myeloma Treatment Options

Robin Tuohy, IMF Senior Director of Support Groups, and her husband Michael Tuohy, a 16-year myeloma survivor and active patient advocate, appeared at a congressional briefing in Washington DC this week. They shared the perspective of patients and caregivers on the myeloma treatment guidelines that were recently proposed by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER). The briefing was organized by the Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC). Robin spoke of her family’s journey in coping with Michael’s illness. She also addressed how the proposals recommended in the ICER Report to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Part B Demonstration Project could negatively impact patients.
