Fresh—and Healthy—Food Choices for the Summer

The recipe for a sound diet contains plenty of seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and olive oil, popularly known as “the Mediterranean Diet.” Recommendations issued this week by the American Academy of Pediatrics reinforce the value of fresh, toxin-free fruits and vegetables that are good to eat at any age.

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Restores Payments for Risk Adjustment Program

On the evening of July 24, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it would reinstate the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA’s) risk adjustment program. This decision is a reversal of the July 7, 2018, announcement from CMS, which stated that payments owed to insurers would not be made. The previous July 7 decision cited a February 2018 New Mexico federal court ruling that questioned the legality of the risk adjustment formula used to calculate payments.

The ACA risk adjustment program subsidizes health insurers who cover individuals with pre-existing and chronic conditions. To offset the costs of covering less healthy populations, the subsidies are collected from insurers with relatively healthy enrollees.

Health insurers expressed concern about the July 7 decision, fearing the move would drive up premiums and create uncertainty in the marketplace. CMS recognized these concerns, stating in their press release, “CMS has determined that taking immediate action to allow for the continued operation of the risk adjustment program is imperative to maintain stability and predictability in the individual and small group health insurance markets.”
