Our Hats Off to Nurses This Oncology Nursing Month

Did you know that May is Oncology Nursing Month? Oncology nurses support and guide patients and their loved ones through the stress of a myeloma diagnosis and treatment, as well as with the anxiety of living with uncertainities of a long-term disease.

This month, the IMF salutes members of our Nurse Leadership Board (NLB) for their experience on the frontlines of myeloma care. The NLB is a professional partnership with nurse experts from leading medical centers. Its mission is to educate nurses, patients, and caregivers to improve patient outcomes. We salute each one of these Myeloma Warriors as they work “by the side” of patients, their families, and their caregivers throughout the cancer journey. Follow our posts at the IMF Facebook page or Twitter feed to see daily spotlights of these nurses.

Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act Passes in the House

On May 14, 2019. H.R. 299, the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 passed out of the House of Representatives with a vote of 410-0. If signed into law, this legislation would provide a presumption of exposure to Agent Orange for Navy veterans who served during the Vietnam era within the territorial waters of Vietnam, allowing a Blue Water Navy Veteran (including those with myeloma) to make a claim for benefits without the undue burden to prove exposure.

The courts have also been addressing this issue. As a reminder, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit changed the political dynamic in January when it ruled in favor of Alfred Procopio Jr. He served on the U.S.S. Intrepid during the war and was rejected for VA benefits for his diabetes and prostate cancer. The government has linked both ailments to Agent Orange exposure. The court ruling requires the VA to cover the costs of extending the benefits to Blue Water veterans, regardless of whether Congress passes its own legislation.

That said, the passage of H.R. 299 is still extremely significant as it would cement the intent and right of Blue Water veteran benefits into law and not leave implementation up to administrative interpretation. The bill now moves to the Senate. Rest assured we will keep you updated of its progress. Click the button below to let your Senator know of your support for the bill.
