IMF Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Mikhael Highlights Key Research from the ASH 2023 Meeting and Expo

Important Myeloma Research Presented at ASH 2023

Presented by Dr. Joseph Mikhael, IMF's Chief Medical Officer

In this insightful video, Dr. Joseph Mikhael, Chief Medical Officer of the International Myeloma Foundation, offered a comprehensive overview of key themes from the December 2023 American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual meeting. The focus on Frontline Therapy compared four-drug to three-drug regimens in autologous stem cell transplant patients, revealing superior responses and setting the stage for a treatment paradigm shift. Screening for Myeloma provided updates from the iStopMM trial, aiming to detect early signs in the general population, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis.

Early Relapse discussions highlighted the early use of CAR T-cell therapy, demonstrating deep and durable responses. Studies featuring ide-cel (BCMA) and cilta-cel (Carvykti) in early relapse showcased their effectiveness. Late Relapse explored the latest in CAR T-cell therapy and bispecific antibodies, introducing new targets and improved administration processes, including promising advancements in trispecifics.

The Health Equity section addressed the link between social determinants and myeloma outcomes, with dedicated abstracts tackling disparities. The "Black Point of View" study aimed to improve clinical trial representation in underrepresented communities, addressing a crucial aspect of health equity.

The Patient-Centric or Patient Experience segment highlighted studies aiming to enhance the quality of life for patients and care partners. Wearable devices for monitoring side effects after CAR T or bispecific treatments were explored, along with investigations into reducing dexamethasone dosage, showcasing positive impacts without compromising efficacy.

Real World Data comparisons emphasized the need to apply therapies properly in clinics to ensure maximum patient benefit. Dr. Mikhael expressed gratitude for the remarkable progress observed in myeloma research during the past year. With over 28,000 attendees and 7,500 abstracts, the ASH meeting served as a platform for myeloma dominance in hematology discussions. The progress made in both quantity and quality of life for myeloma patients is a testament to the collective efforts of researchers and clinicians, marking a unique and impactful period in myeloma research with potential for future advancements and a cure for multiple myeloma.
