2018 IMWG Conference Series,
“The Status of MRD testing”

In this video, IMF Chairman Brian G.M. Durie moderates a lively discussion about the status of MRD testing with Dr. Joseph Mikhael (IMF Chief Medical Officer) and Dr. Sagar Lonial (Emory University, Atlanta). This video is the second in a six-part series that focuses on making sense of multiple myeloma treatment based upon the newly obtained input from three leading research conferences: the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2018 annual meeting, the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) 2018 Summit, and the European Hematology Association (EHA) annual meeting, which all took place during the first two weeks of June 2018.

Putting a Lid on Myeloma

Register NOW for a Regional Community Workshop in Edina, Minnesota

Ken Fabian, the founder and co-chair of the Central Florida Multiple Myeloma Support Group, and his fellow support group members are Putting a Lid on Myeloma. They had staff members at IMF headquarters in Los Angeles, including Dr. Brian G.M. Durie and Dr. Joseph Mikhael, sign a hat with inspirational messages. That hat will be raffled off to one lucky winner at the support group meeting on July 8. You do not need to be present in Florida to purchase a raffle ticket and donate to this fundraiser.

The IMF will conduct a Regional Community Workshop in Edina, MN, on Saturday, July 21, 2018. Registration is FREE, but seating is limited. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from and meet one-on-one with myeloma experts Craig Cole, MD (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI); Martha Lacy, MD, Professor of Medicine (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN); and Teresa Miceli, RN, BSN, OCN (Mayo Clinic-College of Medicine, Rochester, MN).

House Passes Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2017 and Bill Awaits Senate Vote

On June 25, 2018, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 299, the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2017 with a vote of 382 to 0. The legislation intends to extend a presumptive service connection to military veterans who served on the coastal waters of Vietnam during the Vietnam War for certain diseases, such as multiple myeloma, that are caused by exposure to Agent Orange and other herbicides.

Currently, this presumptive service connection is only available to veterans who have set foot onshore of Vietnam, traversed the country’s inland waterways, or boarded a ship that docked in Vietnam’s harbors between January 9, 1962, and May 7, 1975. This legislation defines coastal waters as not more than 12 nautical miles from the shores of Vietnam.

Following the vote in the House, the bill will make its way to the Senate, where its companion bill, S. 422, has wide bipartisan support. The IMF’s veterans’ advocacy group, Veterans Against Myeloma (VAM), previously sent letters of support to Rep. Valadao and Sen. Gillibrand, the bill’s lead sponsors.
