The International Myeloma Foundation congratulates Myeloma Canada’s Co-Founder Aldo Del Col for the Meritorious Service Medal, which was awarded by Julie Payette, the Governor General of Canada, in recognition for Del Col’s exceptional service to the community.

Created by Queen Elizabeth II, the Meritorious Service Decorations enable Canada’s Governor General “to recognize individuals who have made remarkable contributions, who inspire others and share a common goal of making a positive difference. Their acts are often innovative, set an example or model for others to follow, or respond to a particular challenge faced by a community.”

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2002, Aldo Del Col recognized the need to fill a gap for Canadian myeloma patients by creating a grassroots countrywide organization. Del Col co-founded Myeloma Canada in 2005, with the mission “to improve the lives of Canadians impacted by myeloma by accelerating access to better care through awareness, education, advocacy, community engagement and clinical research.”

Del Col also serves as Myeloma Canada’s Chief Scientific Advisor, drawing upon his scientific and pharmaceutical background to drive research focused on optimizing patient outcomes. In 2007, he convened the first meeting of the Myeloma Canada Scientific Advisory Board, which led to development of the Myeloma Canada Research Network (MCRN). Today, the MCRN is comprised of 24 centers in 9 provinces across Canada, with the mission to conduct innovative phase I and phase II clinical and translational research in a collaborative manner to improve myeloma patient outcomes; to publish evidence-based and peer-reviewed consensus statements on the diagnosis and treatment of myeloma; and to develop a nationwide myeloma patient database.

Over and above his work with Myeloma Canada, the International Myeloma Foundation is proud to honor one of our own – Del Col is an active and dynamic member of the IMF’s Board of Directors.

His contributions to the global myeloma community also include serving as a member of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG) Hematology Executive Committee, the CCTG Molecular Tumour Board, the IMF’s Global Myeloma Action Network, the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders, and the MCRN National Multiple Myeloma Database Steering Committee. He was also recently named Member Emeritus of the Ontario College of Pharmacists.

The IMF looks forward to Aldo Del Col being presented with the Meritorious Service Medal at a ceremony that will be held later this year at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Canada.
